About Diabetes and eye health

  • Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable blindness in working age Australians. Yet, with regular eye checks, most vision loss is preventable. Regular eye checks and early detection are key to minimising the number of people affected by diabetes-related vision loss.
  • All Australians with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy (DR). Of the 1.5 million Australians that have known, diagnosed diabetes about one in three will develop some form of diabetes-related eye disease – that’s more than half a million Australians that could develop preventable diabetes eye disease and vision loss.
  • Diabetic retinopathy is often asymptomatic until it reaches an advanced stage and outcomes of late treatment are usually inferior to early intervention.  Often there are no signs or symptoms of eye damage and it is only picked up when people get their eyes checked for reading or when substantial damage has occurred.
  • Diabetes is a complex condition and people need to have a range of regular health checks and tests to manage their condition. It can be time-consuming and sometimes things get overlooked.
  • Many people with diabetes are not aware they need to have their eyes checked or that they need a specific diabetes eye check.

About the KeepSight program

  • KeepSight is Diabetes Australia’s national diabetes eye check reminder program, delivered in partnership with the Australian eye sector.
  • To date, over 280 000 people have registered to receive diabetes eye check reminders from KeepSight. Together, we contribute to a nationwide effort to reduce diabetes-related vision loss and blindness.
  • When a person joins KeepSight, they will receive reminder notices encouraging them to book diabetes eye checks, with the eye care provider of their choice, when their next check is due (according to clinical recommendations).
  • KeepSight reminders supplement existing recall and reminder systems within eye care practices. It’s designed to make it easier for people with diabetes to get their eyes checked and to do so regularly.
  • KeepSight is a unique public/private partnership that has the potential to reduce the burden of diabetes-related eye disease to our health system and to the wellbeing of Australians with diabetes.

KeepSight benefits for optometrists

  • KeepSight presents a unique opportunity to participate in a nationwide effort to reduce diabetes-related vision loss and blindness.
  • All KeepSight optometrists are profiled on the KeepSight website. It is the primary resource for Australians with diabetes to receive information about managing their diabetes eye checks.
  • KeepSight offer a lead pool of new patients. Diabetes Australia run multiple marketing campaigns to drive new registrations throughout the year. Our website function “Find a KeepSight Provider” links consumers to eye care providers in their area that are registered with KeepSight.
  • All KeepSight reminders encourage people to return to the practice where they last had an eye check for continuity of clinical care, increasing your return visits.

How KeepSight works

KeepSight’s key audience are the 1.5million people with diabetes registered on the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), Diabetes Australia’s members and other Australians diagnosed with diabetes. Once a person registers with KeepSight, the program sends reminders when a person’s diabetes eye check is due. It does this through two pathways:

  • SMS/email eye health promotion messages to people registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS)
  • SMS/email reminder messages that align with optometry practice recall periods

Note: the patient is not required to be an NDSS registrant in order to join KeepSight.
